Almost 20 schools from Sedibeng District Municipality have benefitted from the initiative. The RWF launched the Schools Water Harvesting Project in 2012 as a way to help schools to prevent water losses and encourage learners to adopt positive attitudes towards the saving of water.
Each of the 195 schools had received two 5000-litre water tanks and stands. Water harvesting tanks were supplied and installed. RFW says the harvested water plays a paramount role in schools that are located in poor communities. It is used to irrigate flowers, lawns and in the flushing of the ablution facilities.
Furthermore, learners may even use the water for cleaning their classes and washing their hands. This will enable the municipal supplied water to be used mainly for drinking purposes.
