A case of taxi violence is suspected, after the death of a taxi owner after a shooting on the Old Vereeniging Road in Klipriver on Tuesday afternoon.
Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Nombulelo Mohlakoana confirmed that on Tuesday just after half past three, one taxi owner and taxi drivers were standing outside a taxi under a tree on Old Vereeniging Road M61 when unknown men in a black sedan motor vehicle started shooting at them. There were a total of four occupants in that vehicle.
The taxi owner died immediately whilst one taxi driver died on the other side of the road. It is suspected that the shooting could be caused by violence between the Thokoza and Meyerton taxi associations.
Mohlakoana also confirmed that on the same day at about just after half past seven in the evening, a taxi owner, who is said to be a Deputy President of Vaal Wits Taxi Association, was driving back home near Evaton, when he was followed by unknown men who shot at his car. He died on the spot.
These cases are being investigated by SAPS.
