The Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu met the Mayoral Committee of Emfuleni Local Municipality to discuss the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Report on the Gauteng Provincial Inquiry into the sewage problem of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, resulting in the pollution of the Vaal River.
The meeting was attended by Councillors K. Ntombela, MMC Basic Services and E. Kele, MMC Human Settlements and MMC Infrastructure, B. Ntsele. Sisulu made and explained her decision to apply Section 63 of the Water Act of 1997, following the recommendations made the SAHRC which gave the affected stakeholders that included the Department of Water and Sanitation 60 days to respond.
The acting Executive Mayor was pleased that the interface between Emfuleni and the minister has allowed the constitution to play an active role as the communities of Emfuleni, the Municipality.
The Minister committed to ensuring that ELM is involved throughout the process moving forward.
