According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, in February 2020 the dam was at just 57%. But with the persistent wet weather conditions that the Vaal has been experiencing, the much anticipated 100 mark was reached.

“With the strong inflows, the integrated Vaal river system continues to recharge, with the example of the Vaal Dam reaching 100% at 5pm on Monday, February 8.”

“The dams in Gauteng also continue to recharge, but the main source of contentment is based on the fact that the catchment, whose tributaries feed the integrated Vaal river system, have had hefty recharges. Even the two dams in Lesotho, Mohale, and Katse are recovering.”

Some residents of Sebokeng expressed their joy at these news. “We have waited for this to happen for 3 years and God is good,” said Nonki. An old man, Mandla also added, “The Vaal River was dry for too long. This rain came at a much-needed time.”
